- Chapter 11 -

"You have slept a long time"

The first thing coming into her focus was a shaft of sunlight painting a wooden horse. It cleared it's throat, shakily saying: “You have slept a long time, I watched over you through several sunrises. Do you know, that you sing in your sleep? You have a beautiful voice. My name is Quilt, I guess the pattern on me, all different colors. You are all pink. Is your name Pink?”

She looked at him and sang: “Almost, it is Pink Cotton Candy Tutu Girl, you may call me Pink if you'd like. Where am I?”

"This is a fine place"

“This is a fine place, I have been here many years, Rupert took me away from that old store where I stood, dust coating me like a blanket. He gave me a fresh shine and let me live in his house. You know, I used to work in the entertainment business, carrousel horse. I do miss the children, they dreamt of big things, sitting on my back.”

“I work in the carnival too, one of my best friends is called Esroh, his aunt is Eram.”

“Don't know Esroh, but Eram rings a bell. Is she a bit bristly, sort of horsy - excuse the pun - but deep down a fine filly?”

“Yes indeed!”

“So she is still doing the rounds. Good for her. I do miss it sometimes, although this spot is mighty good. Sometimes I go out there into the sunshine, talk to the critters, interesting folk.”

Quilt, the wooden horse.

“Have you met rabbits and spiders?”

“Have you met rabbits and spiders?”

“Plenty around here. The rabbits are not so very talkative. But there are also many other creatures, you'd be surprised how nice most of them are. All busy, doing their work. So, you sing a lot, can't speak like normal folk?”

“Yes, I sing. I can also whisper. But Lady Rose told me that it is more important what I say, not how I say it.”

“Lady Rose – let me think – a dancer, right? Rupert told me about her, how he had fallen in love with her, when they performed together. He wrote his poetry and she danced when he read it to the audience. She went on to become a famous star though. Rupert never was able to forget her. Have you told him yet about her?”

“I really have not talked to anybody, after I dropped out of the sky.”

“Don't you remember, Rupert found you, he carried you to this cabin. He just went out fishing for supper. He will be happy that you are in good shape, well, as far as I can tell.”

“I feel actually quite refreshed. Have you seen my clover garland?”

“It's all wilted, but we have plenty clover out there, see the rabbits over there. Let us go out there together, I'll show you around.”

“Are these white balls clover?”

Tutu greeted the rabbits, but they kept on going with the chewing of their pellets. One of the rabbits, a very large fellow, hopped over to them. He stood up, high on his hind legs.“Nothing good ever comes out of mingling of different kind. We have gotten used to Quilt here, but that about does it for us.”

“Excuse me, but I have just one question. Are these white balls clover?”

“Don't know of any other.“

“May I pick a few?”

“Well, suit yourself, the meadow does not belong to us, this man Rupert owns it. We should have it really, we like to eat all this delicious food, and he does not even eat grass.“

“All right, thank you.“ She did not want to argue with this big rabbit. Their hind legs could be rather nasty weapons. So she looked at the clover a little closer. It looked just like the violet one. She plucked out a trumpet, oh yes. Quickly, she braided another garland, draped it around herself. The world looked decent again.
