- Chapter 9 -

Threatening clouds bubbled up

Star Man and his friends came to an open expanse, a small river running through it, a bridge ahead. Threatening clouds bubbled very low over their heads, churning and pumping, breathing. Suddenly a gust of screeching wind picked Tutu right off his shoulder, flung her high up into the sky, the dark roiling clouds swallowing her.

Star Man stood on the road, heartbroken.

He let go of a bunch of balloons

Mirror Boy looked up to the threatening sky. This would not be a good day in this new location. I had better batten down the hatches. No business today. And he let go of a bunch of balloons that were supposed to have decorated the entry to his fun house. He followed them with his eyes, scanning the sky. In the dark gray clouds appeared a bright pink spot. Am I that distraught that I start seeing her like a ghost?

Lady Rose looked at her house in a house

Lady Rose looked at her house in a house. So much history there. Tutu had changed the appearance a bit, installed her elaborate lacy curtains, as she had done throughout the Story-Castle. Where was that little girl. Lady Rose and Mirror Boy had notified the police, had hung up posters everywhere permission was given. Of course Mirror Boy had to travel with his carnival group, she stayed home in her castle which was in a permanent location on the fairgrounds of her town. They contacted each other often, but there was never any news. Nobody had seen Dunk either. It seemed clear that he had taken her.

The family Bird sang and chirped about her, but the veil of sadness hung over her. All around her, things had taken on a dimness, even her stories brought tears to people's eyes now. So very precious, so very fragile, so very missed. How was her little song: “If I could switch on a light inside of me, with all the joy I have, I could light up your castle.”

Tutu started to sing those words after several years of tough learning. How hard the first steps had been. In the beginning, she used very simple words and she did not seem to make much progress at all. Her dancing lessons succeeded better, soon her limber body spun, she found out how to incorporate her flying sugar threads into her expressions. It seemed as if those movements came naturally, as if she had been born with them. But she knew better. She fought for every move. The dancing contained no story yet, all her movements were pure emotion and therefore were not very controlled.

Lady Rose taught her how to read. Understanding dawned in Tutu's mind after spending endless hours of reading simple books with pictures, that conveyed the content of the stories.

And then, all at once

And then, all at once, it bubbled out of her. She just could not stop singing her words. And when she was alone, whispered stories flowed from her mouth. She started dancing with a story in her mind. It became a fight with herself, so that somebody looking at her performance would know what she tried to say. She agonized for weeks at times, just to smooth out some rough spots, some movements that were excessive and distracting, sending the viewer into an unintended direction.

Tutu blossomed into a true artist. Often now, she would be on the stage with Lady Rose, acting out part of the stories. Audiences delighted in her sensitive rendering. They came from far away to get a glimpse of that pink sugar girl. She also grew some, until she reached up to over Lady Rose's knee. Her age could not be determined; although her mental state put her into the range of sixteen to eighteen, when she met Mirror Boy.

He was smitten by her the instant he saw her dance. When he went to thank her for her performance, he noticed how she reached up to just his shoulder height. He had never met a young lady that had to look up to look into his eyes. And did she! Straight, almost piercing, alert. Nothing hidden. He wanted to shout at her right there and then: “You are the one, the one that will make me complete.” But he just flushed, his face now pink as her tutu. Lady Rose saw it too. And she was happy for Tutu. But Pink Cotton Candy Tutu Girl was totally unaware.
